Web Design Review as a Design Process
Web design review often happens at two stages of the design process. During an initial review of existing infrastructure and as an ongoing process during new web design.
By sitting down with a designer, a business owner can evaluate their current website with a fresh pair of eyes. This facilitates critical thinking and gives the client an opportunity to see where they went wrong and what can be improved.
Ongoing review as part of any website project is crucial to ensuring the client’s needs are met. It contributes to a positive user experience. Ongoing review gives clients the chance to see a great website evolve.
It’s important to review things with the client at two stages of the process. 1. When the visual design elements have been constructed, and 2. When content is ready to go live.
All content should be approved by your clients during review. It’s important to advertise this ongoing review process as a part of the product design when on-boarding new clients. This will help them understand its importance in constructing a resilient website.
A Website is a Reflection of Your Business
As with any marketing process, it’s important to know your client. A website should clearly communicate how your client works, their professional standards and their demeanour.
Customers expect to notice some similarities between the tone used on a website and the tone of your client. This is easy to facilitate with a review of websites as they are built. Give your clients the chance to contribute to their content. This helps their tone complement your copywriter’s in the final product.
Sydney Web Design Reviews at Quikclicks
At Quikclicks, we review websites with our clients throughout the whole project management process. We complete reviews throughout the following design checklist:
Pre-Design
Before we start coding and designing the layout of your site, we will call you for a 20-minute interview. We will discuss your existing infrastructure and content preferences.
We will point out web browser to your existing website. We will then provide a critical judgement about what’s working and what isn’t. We will then ask which areas of your old site you’d like to replicate on the new version. Also, what additional content needs to be included.
Design and Development
Following an initial consult, our designer will start the process of designing the visual elements of your home page in Photoshop. We will flesh out the heading text on your website by performing keyword research. Once the visual styling and headings are complete, we will send this to you for review and any necessary changes.
Content Writing
Our copywriters will use the keyword research we conducted in the previous step to begin writing about your business. We will flesh out the visual components and headings on your website with written advertising content.
This content is designed to rank effectively and appeal to customers in your market. When content has been drafted, this will be forwarded to you for review. You can make any comments or changes needed before the final copy is uploaded live to the web.
The copywriting process is ongoing. We will submit any and all content to you for review. This way, we ensure it matches your business’s services, goals and strategies.
Ongoing web design review may involve a telephone call each month to discuss your blog. During the call, we will ask a few questions about your quarterly business strategy. Your answers will provide inspiration for blog posts which will be submitted for review prior to upload.
Reviewing a Website: Best Practice
When reviewing the content Quikclicks have sent to you for review, it’s important to consider the following:
- Don’t fall prey to information overload. There is a lot of content on any website and no need to review the entire website in one sitting. Review one page at a time, writing down your comments on pen and pad or in a word processing document.
- Take a break every 15 minutes to ensure you’re as fresh as possible for the entire review.
- Be concise with the website reviews you provide your developer. From a web development point of view there’s nothing worse than having to interpret client directions halfway through a project. Be clear in your critical analysis and demonstrate attention to detail, stating your preferences in an easy to understand manner. This speeds up the process and ensures you get what you want, not what the designer interpreted you want.
- Don’t copy everyone on your team in on the website review process. Trust your judgement when asking for assistance reviewing your new website. It’s unnecessary to ask every team member, just the execs and employees who spend the most time talking to clients. This gives you scope to explain how your clients want to be approached and how to best advertise value to them.
People assume that website design reviews are about providing feedback, they’re actually about being precise with design. Co-creating content with your website development team adds authority to the value communicated on your business website. It provides clarity for designers and for your audience when they read your content and then call you for more information.
