About Brisbane

Originally Aboriginal Turrbal and Jagera Country, a British penal settlement was established at Redcliffe, north of Brisbane, in 1824. In 1842 the area was opened by the colonists to free settlers. Between then and – according to some estimates – 1934, at least 20,000 Indigenous Australians, and up to 2,500 settlers were killed in conflicts sometimes referred to as the Australian Frontier Wars.

Today, Brisbane is Australia’s third largest city. The metropolitan area of the city has roughly 2.4 inhabitants, with approximately 3.5 million living in the greater South East Queensland area (in which Brisbane is centred).
