History of Woolongong

Wollongong, informally referred to as “The Gong”, lies on the narrow coastal strip between the Illawarra Escarpment and the Pacific Ocean, 68 kilometres south of central Sydney, New South Wales.

  • Before European settlement in the Illawarra, the region was home to the local Aboriginal people. The name Wollongong originated from the Aboriginal word “woolyungah” meaning five islands. Other meanings have also been suggested, such as “seas of the South”, “great feast of fish”, “hard ground near water”, “song of the sea”, “sound of the waves” and “many snakes”.
  • Dr Charles Throsby first established a settlement here in 1815, bringing down his cattle from the Southern Highlands to a lagoon of fresh water located near South Beach.
  • Charles Hoskins commenced our local steel industry in 1927 by building a steelworks at Port Kembla, thereby commencing a long history of steel production that still continues to this day.
  • Wollongong now has an estimated urban population of 303,000, making it the 3rd largest city in NSW after Sydney and Newcastle. It is the 10th largest city in Australia.
